How do I convert mp4 to 264

An imovie video I saved to file I want to compress then upload to youtube.


I am totally confused. I tried to export it from quicktime player but it only wanted to save it as a .mov .

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

I will give handbrake a try. Part of my issue was the size of a 7 minute file from iMovie is 567mb. I heard that as a .mp4 it is a smaller file. I am about to make a bunch of 60-90 minute videos and am a bit horrified about the size, upload time etc..


Also might be sharing videos with others as a file in the near future and read that it is a more universal format (container as you call it).

From the size of the file I guess that it may be a 1080p (HD) movie. When you upload to share you may find 720p sufficient. Saving to this resolution will result in a much smaller file. You can also choose lower quality when saving to file.


.mov or .mp4 doesn't make much difference to size.
