Q: Mac Pro (Late 2013) won't recognize external Eizo display upon update to El Capitan

Hi! Long time listener, first time caller:

My Mac Pro Late 2013 (3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5, AMD FirePro D500 3072 MB) will no longer reliably display an image on / send a signal to my Eizo CG275W external monitor over Thunderbolt-to-DisplayPort after an OS update from Mavericks (10.9.5) to El Capitan (10.11.6).  Before this OS update, the connection worked reliably for months and years.

The mystery thickens. I am currently using another monitor, a Dell E2414Hr, that works more reliably when connected to the same computer via a Thunderbolt-to-DVI converter. Still not perfect, but the Dell will often be recognized / display an image upon startup whereas the Eizo will not.

I have tried several different fixes. I have reset the SMC, the NVRAM, jammed the secret "Detect Displays" button in Displays Preferences, and updated Eizo's ColorNavigator software to the latest version. I have swapped Thunderbolt buses, swapped cables around, and reset the computer multiple times all with mixed results. Very occasionally the Eizo will work, !, but there is no reliable workaround. Furthermore, if the computer / monitor goes to sleep or is turned off it will not reliably work again upon waking / startup. Most recently I had the Eizo running off the Thunderbolt-to-DVI converter which worked but it could not supply the correctly proportioned image. I have not tried running the Eizo off the HDMI port as I do not yet have a HDMI-to-DisplayPort converter and this Eizo model has no HDMI In.

The MSRP $4000 question is: do I have to roll back my OS to Mavericks to get this monitor working again? There is also an active Repair Program for my model of Mac Pro...is this perhaps relevant in this case?

Many thanks for any ideas you might have.

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), 3.5 GHz 6-Core Xeon, AMD D500

24-hours later and I've done some more research and a few additional tests:

    • HDMI-to-Mini DisplayPort does not give signal to the Eizo
    • Rolling the Mac Pro's OS back to 10.9.5 (via a clone on an external drive) does not fix the problem
    • The Repair Program (mentioned above) would not apply to my Mac Pro as it was manufactured before February 2015
    • The Eizo receives signal from an iMac (Retina 5K, 27", Late 2015) with the current OS (10.11.6) over Thunderbolt-to-DisplayPort

My conclusion for the moment is to head to the nearest Genius Bar and have them check out the GPUs...
