Q: iPhone 7: How to charge and listen to music at the same time..

The new iPhone looks great! But a quick question that i cant find the answer to.. In the car, i use the TomTom app, and listen to music from my phone. Since it needs charging when i use TomTom, i have a cable for the music, and one for charging. Does the new iPhone mean, that i cant charge and listen to music at the same time? Or will there be some accessory available??

Thanks!

So, after having my post deleted not once, not twice but three times, I am going to try to make this a request for a reasonable solution and any community or input that can be provided.

    • The iPhone 7 will require either wireless headphones or an adapter from 3.5 to lightning to listen to music, podcasts or whatever else.
    • I listen to podcasts every night while going to sleep and during the night when I wake.
    • I can not listen to podcasts and charge an iPhone simultaneously unless I use wireless headphones
    • Wireless headphones do not have particularly long battery life and will likely require charging during the night.  I doubt they can be charged while being used.
    • A lightening dock can be used however that is an additional £50 spend.
    • It is important to me to listen to the podcasts at night and also important to have a fully charged phone in the morning as I start my day.
    • Wireless earphones will cost, at least for now, around £160.
    • So, to upgrade to the new iPhone, I won't be able to use the device as efficiently as possible without an additional spend of approximately £200 in addition to the new device which won't suit my needs as well as my existing device.

I am willing to surrender my opinion if someone will provide a solution that will help me (and others) to achieve the same level of satisfaction that we currently experience.  The perception I have at the moment is that there is no solution to this problem that doesn’t involve me paying a considerable amount more for a phone that is less user-friendly than the unit I currently have.  I would welcome not feeling the way I do today as I feel Apple is offering us something less that we already have and asking us to pay more for it.

As above, my posts have been removed for not being constructive and being off-topic.  I believe any reasonable person would read the above and consider it to be a reasonable request for help and on-topic.  I am looking for help prior to deciding whether to stay in the Apple ecosystem. (We have a new-ish desktop, a 3 year-old MacBook Pro, 3 iPhones, 3 iPads in use, two more that are “retired” and both the new and old generation Apple TV devices. There are other ancillary devices and there are a litany of iPhone both purchased and retired that are too exhaustive to list.)  Considering the investment we have made in Apple over the years (they can look at my user name and verify the devices we have here) I believe we deserve some assistance understanding why we have the perception that if upgrading we will be paying more for less and if a practical solution is available.

Any help would really be appreciated. You may want to make any suggestions quickly; My posts haven’t stayed up for very long.

    Thanks in advance.

You are completely wrong about pretty much everything you have stated.

If it doesn't work for you don't buy it.

Why stop at 2 ports. Just fill the available space on all sides with ports.

Completely forgot about this. I have a similar connector that I use in one of my cars. But the charging doesn't always work so well.

Posts only get deleted if they are blind rants, opinions, or personal attacks. These forums are for fellow users to try and help each other, not a soapbox for rants about Apple policies or devices. If you care to read further in this thread you will see that the majority position is that adapters that will allow both charging and listening are certain to be on the way IF the market is there for them. Don’t make the mistake of thinking your needs are the needs of the majority. Finally, when the Macbook debuted with a single USB-C port the exact same complaints and arguments ensued. Now Macbook users have dozens of options available that allow charging and working with USB at the same time. Almost certainly the same will happen with the iPhone 7 until the transition to digital is the norm.

As for the ranting about adapters, that’s a straw man argument. Talk to any audio/video professional and they’ll tell you their toolkits are a treasure trove of adapters, dozens of them. Ever try to plug your 3.5mm headphones into a high end stereo that uses the older 1/4 inch jack? Guess what? You need an adapter for that. 1/4 inch -> XLR balanced microphone cord adapters are still required even today. Ask any electric guitar player about adapters.

Your argument regarding professional audio/video producers might be true - yes you need some adapters in this field. But we are talking about mobility here. It's simply not practical to carry around different adapters to fully use all the functions of our phone.

I just checked the packaging on a couple of randomly selected BT headphones. Some not terribly expensive LGs have about 10 hours of music listening time. A very nice set of Bose, 20 hours. Jaybirds 8 hours. I don't know about you but, any of those would get me through the night.

Respectfilly, the posts I had submitted were not anywhere near blind rants however I get the need for a more analytical approach.

Again, respectfully, additional adapters cost money, and when distilled down to fundamentals I still maintain that for more cost the net effect is a less fluid, less friendly solution.

I accept that what is important to me will be less important to others however that doesn't change what this will cost me in money and contrivance.

    Thanks for your help!

(btw, wireless airpods/ear-phones are not a viable solution for long hours of listening due to potential impact on brain - impact is hypothesized but not much evidence to either confirm or deny yet. Long term studies will be needed so until then caution typically prevails.)

There is plenty of evidence that they don't cause problems. Even the American Cancer Society agrees.
