Problem with Best Data Smart One Series 56K USB external modem...

I have just updated Jaguar to 10.2.8. The above external modem was working before I updated, but now it's acting up.

Tried to connect to the Internet and the modem couldn't be found. Went to the list of modem scripts in the Library folder and it had been on 56USB, but I changed it to BestData 28.8-33.6. For some reason this worked, but only for that Internet connection!!

Tried connecting again and it couldn't find the device again! I checked all of the cables connections and they were fine. Unplugged the USB cable from the modem and plugged it back it. Tried to connect and it worked! The next time I tried to connect to the Internet, it couldn't find the device yet another time!

I reinstalled the modem driver and that didn't help. I have read on this forum that BestData modems mess up in OS X if it goes to sleep. I put the energy savings settings to never sleep. The screen saver did go on for a few mintues before I tried connecting to the Internet.

The BestData modem was the only external one I could find for my B & W. Looked on eBay and other places. Got it on eBay for $30! Hope I don't end up having to find a different one! The Mac has Ethernet, but I can't afford to get high speed Internet right now. That would certainly solve the problem!

If anyone could help me with this frustrating problem, it would greatly be appreciated! Hate to continue to unplug the USB cable at the back of the modem, as in time that would probably ruin the USB port.

Thanks.

silverado93,

I have posted a few times over the past two years and have not heard of a satisfactory solution. We just unplug the USB cable from the back of the modem after every use of the internet. In addition, you will need to watch and make sure the CD light goes out after a couple of seconds. If it stays on and you try to connect, OS X will never reaquire the device.

Jim,

Thanks for the reply to my question. It's the pits a solution hasn't come across to solve this frustrating problem. Think I'll find an Apple USB extension cable on eBay and hook it up to the modem's usb cable. That way the modem's USB port won't get ruined from pulling out the cable... If the extension cable gets messed up from pulling, then just get another cable.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

That is a great idea. I just figured that when the modem's socket wore out, I would have an excuse to buy an new modem! Apple did not have their USB modem yet when we went shopping. When we bought the mini, we did not know that you could only have the internal modem or airport, not both. The laptop connectivity won out.
