Q: Cannot record software instruments

This is so basic I should be ashamed. Used older versions of GB a lot, but just got back to it with El Capitan and V 10. I set up a track to record, choose my software instrument, just like always, press record and the light goes on, the track head moves across the screen, but no region is created and no notes are created. (I'm using GB's internal keyboard at this stage, just trying to get some notes to record.)

What am I missing?

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

Have you checked the track header, if the track is locked?

From the Track menu in the main menu bar, enable the track lock to show:  "Track > Track Header > Show track lock". Also enable "Show Record Enable button". The track should not be locked, and the record enable button on.

No result. Enabled the record button on the track, made sure the lock was off. No change.

If I open an old file with existing green regions, I can dupe those or erase the existing notes and record new ones, which is a work around, albeit a clumsy one. Nothing, however, allows me to create a new track and record to it.

    Weird.

Even if you create a new GarageBand project using a template for the software instruments, like "Keyboard Collection"?  When I am using this template, I can immediately record to the predefined software instrument tracks without having to do something, after I press ⌘K to show the virtual keyboard.

If the tracks from the standard templates are working, you may want to compare the settings to the settings of the tracks in the projects you created yourself manually.
