Q: Trouble with apple remote with keynote?

I'm using a MacBook Pro with my Apple remote to control my keynote presentations and having trouble getting them to communicate. I've had the remote for a few years, and it's worked fine. I thought the battery needed to be replaced because it wasn't working, but that didn't help. Next thing I tried was to pair it with the laptop. Again, they were paired but no control for keynote presentation.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

This is getting well outside my area of experience as I use the new version of Keynote and control it with my iPad.

From memory the Apple remote used infrared so my question to you is 'Do the computers you are trying have IR received capabilities?' If not you may be able to utilise your iPad or iPhone.
