Mouse disconnects repeatedly from MacBookPro

The bluetooth mouse continuously disconnects. Batteries are new. Both Duracell and EverReady. This must be a solvable problem - it certainly has been documented as a common problem, however I am unable to find a solution.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, iOS 9.3.5
