Sep 8, 2016 9:21 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby examples,Hi-
Just tested it.when running:
PHY mode: 802.11n
Channel: 40 (5 GHz, 40 MHz)
RSSI: -48dBm
I don't see transmit rate but there is Tx Rate: 300 Mbps
And then when it goes down:
PHY mode: 802.11n
Channel: 40 (5 GHz, 40 MHz)
RSSI: -51 dBm
Tx Rate: 270 Mbps
And there are between 3-6 networks showing up. Also, it seems to work fine on some networks but not others. connects to my phone, and my other neighbor's router, but not to mine or my school's router.
Thanks!!

Sep 8, 2016 9:51 AM in response to examplesby Grant Bennet-Alder,• Your Router has chosen a double-wide (40 MHZ) channel about channel 40 in the 5GHz band. Less interference and less competition. To have your Router check for less-busy channels, and possibly move to a channel that is less busy, cycle your Router off and on again.
• RSSI (raw signal) minus noise typically at -85 gives you signal-to-noise of about -37, very good.
• A transmit Rate of 270 says you are using the difference between two antennas to double the potential baseband signaling rate of about 135 Mbits/sec, to yield 270 M bits/sec.
This should be working fine, but there are a few things you can check on your Mac:
• be sure you have set IPv6 to "link-local only"
• also in the Option Wi-Fi menu, there is an item called "Wireless Diagnostics" (not to be confused with the simple diagnostic available in the Network pane). Run it and read any recommendations it may make. then choose monitoring and leave it open in the background. (Its voluminous Network report is useless to any but Apple engineers.) But it may send you an alert if conditions change.

Sep 8, 2016 10:03 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby examples,Hi-
tried all that (cycling router, etc). And I had already set the ipv6 to link-local only on the advice of another website, no change.
I ran the wireless diagnostics, it said that the location wasn't auto (because I set it to manual when doing the OSXdaily fix. Have been switching back and forth between auto and my manual one). It also said network "may be crowded", not much I can do about that, especially at school. And that's it, it wasn't much help.
So it looks like things ought to be working? Any other thoughts? I'm so confused! Been a full day almost and nothing's cleared up. reset basically everything from macbook to router and still kicking me off all the time.
thanks!

Sep 8, 2016 10:21 AM in response to examplesby Grant Bennet-Alder,You can examine whether your network is crowded using tools inside "Wireless Diagnostics" using the SCAN function. This is what mine looks like, But I live in the woods, far from neighbors, and have deliberately set up my Routers to avoid conflicts:

You would want to check to see if others are using the same channels. Unfortunately, this does not account for the amount that signals "spread" (use frequencies up and down from their nominal channel).

Sep 8, 2016 10:26 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby examples,So, when I try to connect with my neighbor's, we reset the router and did a fresh network name and security, so i know there was nobody else on it but us, and mostly just me. I doubt that crowding was the issue.
This happened about 2 days after I upgraded to el capitan, would this have been the issue somehow?
I also noticed that this happened actually right after I downloaded Spotify. Any chance this could have messed something up?
thanks

Sep 8, 2016 10:34 AM in response to examplesby Grant Bennet-Alder,when they say "crowding" they mean that the spectrum is crowded, not that there are many users on simultaneously. That is why the WifiExplorer spectrum graphs are helpful.

Sep 8, 2016 10:36 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby examples,oh, good to know. Thanks!
OK, let me back up and try that scan function. Will update ASAP
thanks for all your help so far!

Sep 8, 2016 11:44 AM in response to examplesby Grant Bennet-Alder,Now you need to see what channels those others are using. Open that window a little wider and you can drag the column headings around to show you what channel they are using as well.

Sep 8, 2016 3:01 PM in response to examplesby Grant Bennet-Alder,Most of those channels around 36 to 50 overlap. If they were ALL eduroam, that would not be a problem, but clipped off along the bottom of your chart i see there is another network-name using a wide channel on 44. That will overlap and clash with most of the others.
Have you asked network Diagnostics to Monitor your connection? You run the first part, then select Monitor and leave the window open in the background:
then it changes to this and you go about your business, until it changes:

Sep 10, 2016 8:13 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby examples,hi,
So i've been running the monitor for the past few days and nothing has really popped up and things seemed to be working. But I also noticed that I had deleted spotify.
I put spotify back on and same problems. Is it possible that a program would make it so that I have trouble connecting to certain networks? Like school networks?
thanks
