Q: MacBook may have a serious issue..

So, i stopped using my laptop for a good while.

I came back to try and use it about a month ago.  Its going SO much slower than it used too.  I mean it's BAD.  I was going through a tutorial (a user on here posted it to someone else's issue similar to mine) to fix it.  I got to the second step.  when I held Option down to open it in "Safe Mode" (I'm Assuming) the screen got really bad.  When you would move the mouse across the screen it would cut off on the right side and you would see the mouse on the left side as well.  I shut the computer down, and opened it back up.  the screen was still like this on the "select" user screen.  once I selected a user (that I could actually see) and it loaded it up the screen went back to normal.  I logged out and tried to switch user, and it's back to normal.  I don't think I can screenshot it, but I could probably recreate the issue and take a photo of it with my phone if it is necessary.  I will attach a photo if I can of the steps I was taking.

Thank you for your help!!

I Don't think the website will let me post a photo from my phone.  I'm not using the computer as the beach ball loads after almost every click.  Between clicks it runs great though.  Maybe the issue is related to the display error I was having when holding option when starting?  Thanks again.

On first inspection I see your Firefault is trying to decrypt and failed

Use FileVault to encrypt the startup disk on your Mac - Apple Support

This could be all the beach balling you are seeing.  Did you initiate this decrypting?

Yes I just checked the file vault and this is what it is doing: http://tinypic.com/r/n5osr4/9

So, are  you saying I need to do: Disk Utility>File>Unlock.

Also, I recently reformatted I think 3 weeks ago, and I believe the Time Machine reset then.  I will use that link once I get it working correctly.  It's too slow to do much on it right now.

Oh, and the Steamclean thing, that wouldn't actually be the Software 'Steam' that is used to link bought games to the account, or is it something else?  I believe I have an anti virus program I downloaded when I first reformatted the computer.  Maybe I should run it after I fix the File Vault?

Your Disk is Encrypting. This can take days, plugged into power and running.

You would want to use an uninstaller to remove any antivirus—this always causes problems on a Mac

It's been encrypting for a month.  It's almost always plugged on and I don't usually turn it off, just put it in sleep mode?  Is it normal to be still encrypting?  The only reason I turned it on I think was to update OSX.  If all it does is require a password to access Discs then I don't see any reason to keep it on.  If I turn it off could it possibly fix this issue?  I can baerly type this message out.  It's running so so so slow right now to change pages or type a new line causes it to load and it takes a bit for the text to show up.  This is truly awful I'm about to rip my hair out!!

Actually it may even have been longer since I started the File Vault.  I'm slightly scatterbrained, forgive me, but I started it almost right after the reformat, and I'm actually thinking that was closer to two months ago.

    Well it's not working.

I Thought I did this right, but it's currently running just as slow, and file vault is still stuck on "Estimated Time Remaining".  Making everything run horribly.  I cant find the "File and Unlock" button on the partition in the recovery mode menu.
