iPhoto comes up, I click on people or photos and it crashes. I click on re-open and it does it again, immediately, over and over.
iMac computer version 10.8.5. iPhoto version 9.4.3
I read some posts from 2013, but perhaps this is a newer problem? (Naturally it gives me a fright that my photos may disappear into the wild blue yonder.)

A lot of older versions of iPhoto 11 are having this right now:

1. goto /Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/Resources
2. delete the files ' googlemap.html ' and googlesearch.html
Iphoto no longer crashes, places doesn't work but it doesn't bother me too much.
And if you're worried about your photos disappearing make a back up now.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync- but there are many others. Search on MacUpdateor the App Store
The reason for these crashes is that Apple did not renew the contract with Google for access to the map servers. The java scripts in the iPhoto application in the files ' googlemap.html ' and googlesearch.html will crash, when they try to connect to Google servers. The fix that TD posted will prevent the crashes, but you can no longer use the maps in iPhoto 9.4.3.
The newer iPhoto versions (iPhoto 9.5.1 or newer) do not have this problem, because they are using different map servers. If your iPhoto is an App Store version consider to upgrade to El Capitan and iPhoto 9.6.1.

Whatever you decide - iPhoto is no longer supported by Apple and a dead end. If you upgrade to El Capitan, consider to use the new Photos for Mac application instead. It is developed and supported and getting better and better.

I went to Applications, and clicked on iPhoto but in the drop-down menu, I don't see Contents/Resources. Meanwhile it took six tries to pull down the menu due to it crashing almost immediately (a few seconds).
My iPhoto came with my iMac so is that the same as this post from you? "an App store version"?
All iPhoto 9.4.3 are the same - you need to fix is as has been posted twice now - you also can disconnect from the internet, launch iPhoto and in the iPhoto preferences set look up places to never and the reconnect to the internet , reboot and you should be fine

It depends. If your iMac had MacOS 10.7 Lion installed with iPhoto or a newer system, and no separate installer disks, then you should be seeing iPhoto in your Purchases history at the AppStore. Launch the AppSTore and click the fourth tab "Purchases".
If you purchased your Mac with MacOS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or older, there will have been installer disks for iPhoto, not an AppStore version, and you will not be able to reinstall from the AppStore to update to iPhoto 9.6.1.
