Microsoft want me to download Defender before I change my Hotmail password in case malware lurks in my Mac and hackers get the new password. Is this wise?

Microsoft Defender is for Windows: it's not applicable to Macs. There is a rogue program called Mac Defender but they wouldn't be offering you that - it's recognized malware.
