Q: drums keep disappearing when recording ..

Hi All  I have a roland HD1 kit  and its all linked up to  logic pro x

I have an ongoing niggle where I want to play and record my own drums but 30 seconds into playing or recording  the drums all drop out one by one.

This has cost me a new Mac mini  as I was told it was a hard drive issue .. but I have the same problem on a brand new machine .. can anyone help me  as Im going slightly nuts here trying to solve this.

I should also point out that  it does the same when I use a midi keyboard for drums too

any help would be gratefully appreciated ..

you will have to talk to me in " idiot" mode  as I'm not too good with complicated comp talk  lol ..

Thanks in advance

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), roland HD1 drum kit

Don't worry Codger, there will be a solution.

I am more of an idiot than you, I can guarantee it!

First off,  to get an answer on here you will need to list the spec you have,

Which Mac mini is it?  year, processor? Ram etc etc

Is everything else recording fine? only the Roland causing the problems?

Ok, so everything is doing it, so the its not only the drums. the problem lies elsewhere.

Are you using an external drive also?  or is everything being recorded to the Mac mini?

we know the RAM won't be the issue,  you said its an i5, but which processor does the Mac mini have? ie: 1.4GHz.  or 2.6ghz  etc?

drums and keyboard go in separate  usb slots

    the spec is

    2.6 GHz Intel Core i5

    8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

I do use an interface  for other instruments  also  on a separate  usb in .  so in theory nothing should be clogging this up .

what happens is  .. I start  drumming  and about 30 seconds into recording  I start losing  drums one by one

its a bit like a battery dying out until there is nothing there at all   this happens  just playing and recording

I had the same problem with a macbook  and was told it was the hard drive dying.. !!  which is why I got the brand new  mac mini  only to have the same fault .

drums worked fine on  logic 8 etc .

and I have just found out that it also has the same fault on garageband

Yes, thats the way you have always recorded, but you have also had problems in the past.

You really should be recording to an external 7200 rpm drive,    Theres a G Technology Drive for around £75.00

Which is already formatted for Mac, this is well worth getting and may well solve your problems.

This only started when  I got El Capitan and logic pro x .  before then I never had any problems with recordings

I believe  its one or the other conflicting .

It may have something to do with ElCapitan 10.11.6 true, the macmini is light, so you could take it to your local Apple store, they should be able to sort it.

I have avoided upgrading to El Capitan 10.11.6 being paranoid!

having said all this, you should still be using an external drive for music production.

it may be possible, I am not sure! Apple are not usually supportive of downgrading.

and you need to confirm that the OS is the problem first.

Hopefully someone else on here may help.

if you have the funds I would try using an external drive first, if you still have the problem, you can still carry on using the external drive once the problem is eventually solved.
