Q: Macbook Pro late 2013. Screen black, but external monitor works.
Hi there,
So I have a very peculiar set of issues arising with my Macbook screen. I will say that it is really, really important that I get this fixed as I start university next week and am studying computer sciences, so will really need help on this - so your efforts are much appreciated!!
Now my laptop has been bashed about a little bit, been dropped about twice but never had any problems resulting from it, other than the screen not being able to be closed properly when I try and fold it down. 3 days ago I got off my plane journey and went to get my laptop out of the suitcase (which had been in the hold), and the screen just did not work properly. I left it alone, came back to it the next morning and it worked absolutely fine for a short while. Then, when the laptop was stationary on my desk (and I wasn't touching it at this very moment), the picture cut out again and hasn't worked since.
The start up noise can be heard and the back light (Apple logo) works, but the screen is giving me nothing. When I say nothing, I can see that there is some sort of lighting, but it is black and I cannot make out anything on the screen at all.
So now I have connected my Macbook up to an external screen, but that still hasn't solved the problem entirely. I can only start the laptop in safe mode, as otherwise the screen begins to load ok, but then when the start up progress bar gets to about 25%, the screen goes dead again. Also, after starting up the laptop when it is connected to the monitor, if I unplug the HDMI cable and then reconnect it, the picture won't come through on the external monitor. All I get is a frozen picture of my desktop, but without any files (so just my background picture with the menu bar at the top). Finally, whenever there is movement (eg. typing this message, or scrolling) on the screen the picture breaks up (similar to when there is interference on the TV), and parts of the screen start flashing. When I am not touching my computer, the picture is (almost) fine and isn't being all jumpy. What is even stranger, is when I watch a Facebook video (which only takes up a fraction of the screen), the interference only happens right n top of the video, and not anywhere else on the screen. Now I also have a PS4, which I use on the same monitor with the same HDMI cable and there are no problems there, so it must be this Mac.
I have also tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC and other suggestions in this thread here: Laptop screen is black, external monitor works but nothing so far has worked.
So, if anyone could shed some light on what is going on here I would be very much obliged! Do I have a hardware problem, a Software problem? I have no idea what's wrong nor do I know how to fix it/get it fixed?
Many thank yous,
Tom
