I have a Mac Air running El Capitan 10.11.6. I'll be traveling and will only have public wi-fi available
to connect to the internet. Do I need a vpn app? If so, which are best for my Mac? Free : ) Thanks!

No need for one, unless you have some specific need that you're not telling us about.
Thank you for taking the time to reply. My only specific need is not wanting a hacker to obtain my banking information, for example.
I would say 100% of all banking websites (at least in north America) are encrypted with top of the line technology.You can't even press the back button without having to log in you credentials all over again and start from the main page.
If you are worried about key strokes being hacked then a VPN will not help you as the key strokes are local on your laptop.
