that would make me think of a video driver problem with Sierra. The good news is that those kinds of bugs are not app specific and they tend to get fixed in later versions of a major OS update.
If this were the case, wouldn't we be seeing similar issues across other apps? To me this seems more like the sort of thing that happens when Apple deprecates a particular OS function that some apps depend on, and an app developer fails to update their code accordingly. In this case, the app developer would be Apple themselves since Aperture is no longer actively supported.
Hi all, I just wanted to thank all of you that are continuing to participate in this question. I just hope that someone from apple is following this and realize the the tremendous popularity of Aperture and possible take action on it. If any of you know other Aperture users that are concerned with these issues, please have them comment on this topic. Thanks again, NT
It's unlikely Apple monitors these forums. The best way to increase the visibility of this issue is to file a bug report for macOS Sierra. The more people file a bug, the more likely it will be addressed.
I paid for the original version of Aperture, then the updates. I won't pay more for a dumbed down version. Aperture is the only thing keeping me tied to Mac ...
To all, glad to see I am not the only Aperture fan out here. I have tried Photos and Lightroom, and I strongly prefer Aperture. I hope there is some way we can get past this.
Presently on my 27" iMac 17 mid 2011, I am copying my Aperture file from the computer's HD (file is 1.47 TB) and I am on my 2nd day of getting this done and then I will rename the file and give it a try. If it doesn't work, I will start a new file and load about 1,000 new photos and see how that works.
My graphics is: AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB. I hope this Aperture issue is a problem 10.13 can resolve, if my currents efforts don't work, because I don't have room for 2 computers and a monitor on my desk.
I like the idea of reporting the issue to Apple. We need to get their attention. Where is Steve when you really need him.
Computers are becoming more like politics. This is not one perfect one, and Apple & Windows both have their flaws but at least I think one is better than the other and that's the way I'm voting.
How can I file a bug report on Sierra? I don't see the option.
I was like you...Aperture forever... But I saw the writing on the wall and about a year ago decided I need to migrate to Capture One Pro 9 or Lightroom or something else. Eventually Aperture will no longer work.. tis just a matter of time.
What I found after going through the pain of learning new software was that Lightroom is actually a much better program than Aperture, in so many ways. I am not a lover of Adobe and I resisted for a long time, but I must honestly say that once I have learned Lightroom, I really prefer it over Aperture.
Just a thought for those clinging to Aperture....tis dead... time to move on...
Lightroom is actually a much better program than Aperture
I strongly disagree.
Lightroom has modestly better editing/post-processing capabilities than Aperture. That's it. But it suckss as a digital asset manager, and offers no integration with the Apple ecosystem.
There is no way for a Lightroom "Catalog" to coexist with iCloud Photo Library, and you will lose the seamless integration with native macOS applications including Final Cut Pro and the iWork apps. Adobe provides no extensions to use Lightroom as an external editor for Photos. The only way to have a unified photo library with Aperture that includes your iPhone photos is by abandoning iCloud Photo Library and switching to Adobe's competing product. And like other Adobe apps, Aperture offers a crude, non-native Apple user interface that feels like you're using a web app.
Adobe is actively competing against Apple's cloud services and similar to the practices of Microsoft back in the day, they are abusing their market power to strong arm Apple customers into switching to their own cloud service.

(oh, sorry. but I can't delete the post)
While Aperture is not part of macOS, I don't think we're going to get much traction from filing bug reports for it specifically, since it's no longer officially supported. I think we'll get more attention if we file bug reports under macOS since that's where a lot of Apple's attention is currently focused.
Aperture's exception crashes with older Macs suggest Sierra video driver bugs. These are things Apple might be interested in fixing, so definitely report them as Sierra issues. Apple isn't going to touch Aperture's source code.
I've seen some reports of FCPX crashes post Sierra. I don't know of course, but if Aperture works well on post-2010 Macs that would fit with driver bugs.
Prior to final release Sierra release notes were said to reference Aperture issues. The current release notes don't list any: https://developer.apple.com/library/content/releasenotes/MacOSX/WhatsNewInOSX/Ar ticles/OSXv10.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40017145-SW1
Which does fit with Brian O'Reilly's test results...

I've yet to see any reports of Aperture working bug-free on any version of Sierra running on older Macs such as the Late 2009 iMac. This includes the latest beta, released today.
Using the latest macOS release: 10.12.1 (16B2548a):
1) The crash no longer appears to occur when switching to the Info tab while viewing a photo.
2) The application can be switched to full screen mode by tapping the F key. However when toggling back out of full screen mode by tapping the F key again, the application crashes/closes with no error messages displayed.
It didn't work on my real library. But I just realized that some of those photos were referenced and offline so probably they wouldn't get regenerated. So will try again tonight with all referenced files online.
