I'm on El Capitan, I've been hesitant upgrading again in case Aperture stops working, as I'm still gradually working my way through Aperture saving metadata and exporting pics. I still feel more comfortable editing in Aperture than any other Raw editor, even though it is now fallen behind in features. I previously had to update for compatibility with other apps like Capture One, which made me nervous.

I'm considering upgrading again as apps start to require Sierra. One app in particular I'd like to try out is Raw Power, by former Aperture developers now of Gentlemen Coders, which works as an extension to Photos as well as a standalone app to leverage Apple's RAW engine like nothing else does since the demise of Aperture; specifically it brings a lot of Aperture's features back to Photos. Photos itself is still useless for professional asset management, but the standalone version will be great for more choice in quick easy RAW editing with the same engine Aperture used and some of the same controls, but with even more power (hold down Command with Recovery slider and others to get Photoshop-like view of blown highlights and shadows).

Hi Friends. I also got the dreaded "Black Screen" when toggling into full screen mode a half hour ago. Long story short, as mentioned, Aperture wants to re-open in Full Screen mode after you quit. I finally tried holding the F key down as I launched it and it exited full screen mode and is now functional again. Scared the breezes out of me. Interestingly, I've been using Sierra 12.10.3 for a few weeks now on a new 5K iMac and have had almost no issues, including toggling into fill screen using the F key numerous times. Nothing like this situation. I hope this helps.

Hi Proggie, I posted this generically at the end of this thread, but wanted to repost it again for anyone having the Black Screen crash in full screen. Here's the post:

I am still running ElCap (mid 2012 MBP) and just upgraded to FCPX 10.3.2. I tried creating a separate Photos library (no iCloud) for my documentary photos I use in video productions in an attempt to replace Aperture, but FCPX will only recognize the System library. Now I am doubly worried about upgrading to Sierra. The latest version of Final Cut still works with Aperture, as well as my old iPhoto libraries. Are there any other photo apps that will work in Final Cut?

I have a MBP 17" from 2011, macOS 10.12.3, 16 GB RAM, Internal SSD boot drive. It was checked out by Apple and repaired under a Repair Program pertaining to crashing- new logic board with graphics card, battery and trackpad a year ago (full disclosure). But that is not my problem. I only first noticed that you can't save a PDF, either from the file menu or the PRINT button while in Aperture's Book Creation Mode. I am not an avid photo touchup fan, but I do produce books with Aperture. A work around for the loss of Apple Book Publishing is to export the book pages as a PDF, convert to jpegs and import into Photos to again publish via Apple. I did this in El Capitan last year, but haven't been able to export as PDF or using the PDF to Folder as jpg SERVICE since being in Sierra. Note that Apple has recognized issues beginning with 10.12 concerning PDF problems with other apps, particularly Preview. I have tested this on my 2014 MBAir 7" also, and with the new update 10.12.4 but printing a PDF copy of the book still does not work. Luckily I have an El Capitan image on an external SSD and can still export to PDF on that. I

Here is my experience:

I have a MacBook Pro 15" mid 2010 and I was running Aperture with El Capitan with no problems. Independently that my main photo program is now Capture One when I builded my catalog I used my Aperture version instead of originals, so not to lose all work done specially in the scans of my old negatives and slides (Crop, dust spot, etc.) which are really time consuming. I keep Aperture for 3 reasons

-As I know more about adjusting photos and using the advantage of modern software I can, in Aperture, take all adjustments except those mentioned above and reprocess my old pictures.

-With Aperture I use Nik collection plug ins

-I like to load pictures to my iPad and using Aperture and iTunes is practical

Well enough background. Yesterday I took the plunge and upgraded to Sierra and sure I got all the glitches specially the F key one that behave crazy.

Following neckargecko advise I checked the Custom Metadata and not one of my pictures had any so I did this

I exported an album as a new library to my desktop then quit Aperture. Next I open Aperture with the new just created library and all glitches were gone everything worked nicely. I then went file-change library and chosed my Aperture Library and now everything worked ok the F key open full page and one more press and returned no more funny things and crashes. I don't know what happened but I wanted to share as it may help somebody

Good day everybody

OK thanks. At this time both my macs are still humming along in 10.10.5 Yosemite. I may have to stay with Yosemite for the future unless apple put all Aperture tools back in Photos. So far all the "Upgrades" in Photos are pretty useless to me.

Thanks,

RJ

P.S I have an external USB 3.0 drive that I have been updating to El Capitan to play with.
