Q: Newly Updated end-2011 Macbook Pro kills all of my external hard drives!
Dear community,
this is going to be long. and whiny.
Everything started two weeks ago.
I'm the proud owner of a Macbook pro, bought new in september 2011.. Since then, I took care of it like it was my child, and it is in IMPECCABLE condition. As I was to find out last week, the Macbooks from this period pretty much all had a graphic card problem which caused them to crash. it just happened to me two weeks ago. In despair, i bring it to the Apple store (3 hours drive from my house) and get it back the next week with a brand new motherboard. OK. until now. sort of ok.
I get it back, it starts fine, I use it, manage to do a time machine back up on my external hard drive, go to sleep.
The morning after, i go to work on my computer as usual (I'm a designer..) and it says I should update my El Capitan.
I say fine, press upgrade.
After that, nothing worked anymore.
After two days calling up Apple Care, crying all the tears in my body (note that I haven't been able to work for the past two weeks, and money doesn't grow on trees..) I manage to start my computer again after a whole day of recovery from disk utility.
However, when it starts, it's not the same computer. Internet is flashing (fixed that), all of my fonts have been deleted, some Adobe programs don't work.. Ok. it's fine because I have that all saved on my external hard drive, right?
WRONG.
I plug in BOTH my external hard drives (one is a WD My Passport 1TB with firewire (that one has all my life on it. and all of my time machine saves ever) and the second one is a Samsung 1TB with less important things, but anyways.
Samsung became "read only" instantly.
And WD, with everything i ever did (photos, work, etc etc..), Impossible to mount, turns on, and blinks, but doesnt appear on the desk. did the Terminal "disk util" thing, and its name appears at the bottom, but can't make anything happen after that.
I've spent two weeks on forums trying to fix everything by myself, because I don't want to bother someone with my problems, if it's something I can try to fix. But honestly, I am exhausted.
Whenever I end up on a forum where someone says "this happened to me, lost all my files", my heart stops a little.
Can someone please help me to save my external hard drive's files? This is the most important thing to me...
As for my computer.. I don't even know what to do anymore...
The (lovely) AppleCare lady told me to reinstall Snow Leopard from a dvd and then reinstall Yosemite (even though i've been on El Capitan since 2015), but honestly, my computer was fine until I did the last El Capitan update...
Can ANYONE please help me..?
MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), null
