been given a apple gift card, which was intended for use on apple apps or iTunes store, do not need anything in the apple store, have macbook and iPhone.

how can i transfer the gift amount to itunes

Hi Carolyn that's not helpful at all, the gift cannot be used!! without buying good that i don't want!!
Not a very satisfactory answer surely within the Apple organisation is must be possible to shift the value of the gift from one area to another.
