Q: short cut for changing the screen resolution

Several times I have accidentally clicked on a key while holding the mouse and my screen suddenly zoom to a very large resolution.

This would be ok if I knew how to bring it back to the resolution in then system preferences.

Does anyone know what the shortcut is that i accidentally click and how I might reverse the action

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11)

Try holding down the option/alt key while click the green button at the top left.

You can put the monitor (screen) to sleep by hitting <control>, <shift> and <eject> (hold down control and shift, then hit eject. Hitting any key or clicking on the mouse will bring the screen back up). A few other suggestions...

You can find other Mac keyboard short cuts at the following link on the Apple Support site. Mac keyboard shortcuts - Apple Support

Also, you may want to go to the Finder and click on the help menu, you will see an option at the bottom of the drop-down menu for "Getting to know your Mac" as shown below. There is a whole Mac tutorial there.

Sorry, I was answering the wrong question !   What I meant to say was, I use the following keyboard short cut... Hold down the control key and scroll with your mouse (you may need to set the System preferences to allow this, see below).

I also use the keyboard short cut of holding down the command key then hitting + to increase text size in web pages, email, etc or command and minus sign to reduce it.

Holding down the control-key while doing the scroll gesture (two fingers on the trackpad or one finger in the magic mouse) can be used to zoom the screen. You can do the same in the other direction to zoom out.

Also there are keyboard shortcuts like command-option-= to zoom in (command-option-minus to zoom back out).

If you want, you can disable these features (I find them invaluable due to my poor eyesight, but it may perplexing and unnecesary for younger eyes).

Go to System Preferences->Accessibility, click on Zoom and uncheck the relevant boxes.

Thank you.  I have macular degeneration in one eye and take shots for it.  So I am glad to have this information.  Command /Option/+  does't seem to work for me but the scroll is wonderful

The key equivalent should be just Command/+ and Command/-.
