Q: How to combine left half of one clip with right half of another

My situation; I'm trying to film myself as 2 characters in 1 shot.  I have 2 clips with the same set.  In one clip, I sit on the left, in the other I sit on the right.  I want to combine them into a single clip where the left half of one clip combines with the right half of the other.  This is slightly different than side by side, cutaway and picture in picture.  Can this be done in imovie?  Help appreciated, thank you.

    Hi, Paulways,

You won't be able to combine the left half of one clip with the right half of the other clip using the video cropping features in iMovie.    However, you might be able to do it using Quicktime.  What you need to do is to crop each clip so that it plays at less than full screen.  In other words, on one clip you want just the left side to play and on the other clip just the right side.  Then you could combine the clips in iMovie using the Side by Side feature.

Before doing any cropping you want first to duplicate your clips and work with the duplicates so you preserve your original recordings.   Once you have duplicated, try these steps on each clip using Quicktime to crop out the left side or right side as needed:

Now you should have two clips, one that plays only the left side and one that plays only the right side.  You should be able to import them into iMovie and use the Side by Side feature to combine them seamlessly.   At least, I think that would work.

If you try this, let us know how it worked out.

    Best,

Hi Rich, thanks so much!  That worked perfectly, it was just what I needed.  I never would have figured that out on my own!  If you have 3 minutes and are curious, here's the finished project; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ss0CP8hTe-Q

Thanks much for all your help!
