If purchased directly from Apple, their return policy is 14 days.

If purchased from other than Apple, you will be governed by the

return policy of that retailer.

I'm not sure how you could have missed the fact the there was a new Watch coming in the fall. It's been discussed for months.

All you can do is try by taking the watch back to the store where you purchased it. Be courteous and understand that if they do exchange it, they are doing a favor to you. If they don't, they are simply following the time limit set out for this.
