How do I connect my Macbook 12 to my tv?

So i have my Macbook 12 and i used a USB-C VGA adapter and then ran VGA to HDMI and plugged the HDMI male into the back of the tv. Then when i switched my tv to HDMI(2) the port i plugged it into, i get a message on the tv that says: "Not supported Format"? I tried messing with the resolution and mirroring the display but i am having no luck. Any help would be tremendous!
