Q: My imac disk ( El Capitan 10.11.6-- 2 Terabyts) full and FCPX won't work. I moved some fcpxbundles from library to a usb outboard hard drive (seagate 2 trabyte) and erased them from  the iMac. NowFCPX says it's missing data like effects So can't shar

Help!  My FCPX (v-10.2.3) doesn't function because my iMac drive is full (21.5 inch iMac has 2 terabyte w/ OS El Capitan v 10.11.6)  I had tried to clear space by moving tons of files to an outboard usb Seagate drive (2 terabyte) which barely made a dent...then on a friend's advice I found (under Movies) a file called Final Cut Backups. In it were 4 files with extension, ".fcpbundle"  I moved three of them to a different Seagate usb drive -- they had 2.82 GB, 21.6 GB, and 68.21GB which I figured should be enough and erased them from my iMac drive -- Wrong! It says I've got only 13.46 GB free on my total 2 Terabyte iMac drive!

The fourth fcpbundle says it's 1.72 TB!! But before moving that I went back and opened FCPX and found the warning triangle all over my library...while my latest project looked OK I couldn't export/share because the pop-up window said FCPX was missing data for efx etc (the media looked and displayed fine) and could not be output.

Can FCPX operate with the 'bundles' moved to another drive? How do I make them discoverable in a new place? Or how do I put them back?
How can I make sure future bundles don't clog up my iMac Again?

Do I need a RAID of drives? if so which ones?

I found other folders with folders labeled "Render Files" and back-up folders for projects with .fcpbundle files inside

How can I get this sucker working again?...and what do i do to prevent it from doing the same thing in the future?

Thanks,

John

Backup files are only the database files (no media) and should be small, not Gigabytes, not sure what is going on there.

Was the media for the Libraries  stored within the FCP X Library bundle or saved externally?

If stored within, known as Managed Media, simply copy and paste the Library to any other location.

Then make sure the newly located Library works correctly before deleting anything.

    Maybe check your Library settings.

Click the Library icon in the Browser and this appears in the Inspector:

Clicking on Modify settings shows this:

Hover the mouse over Media and it will reveal the file path to where stuff is being sent.

Then you might be able to track down what's going where.

From you description it sounds like most of the media and render files are not being moved successfully.

Some screen shots would help if you can find where stuff is.

Just to add to Al's comprehensive reply, missing effects can be tricky to resolve. A recent MacBreak Studio episode demonstrates an app (FX Handler) that may help.

    Al, your info was helpful...

NOW I've got my fcpbundles restored to my iMac drive so they can be read...AND i deleted some old FCPX projects to create some disc space (which was my orig problem)  HOWEVER my current FCPX libraries window shows 5 different bundles -- with what looks like duplicate projects in many of them!  Why would any project show up on more than one bundle?

My current project shows up under 2 of the bundles and both look similar-- They projects both have the warning triangle on most of the files (but not all) in both dupes of the project.

I can re-import some of the media to get rid of the warnings triangles but that doesn't seem to do any good with other files... So I'm left with a timeline I can't complete

At one point I got a warning that says I could not SHARE because the files were still accessing the camera. Say WHA?

CAN I ERASE (move to trash) One of the duplicate projects for one of the bundles without harming the other??  Will it help anything?

Should I erase both copies of this project (in the two separate bundles) and start the project again from scratch??

    More Help Please!

Cloud you take a screen shot of your Browser with the projects open?

Use Command-Shift-4 and drag an area around the Browser to do this.

A PNG will be placed on the Desktop that can be dragged directly to your post.

It sounds like you may have opened backup files or inadvertently Duplicated projects, but it's unclear without more info.   ????!!
