Q: Move email messages and folders from one account to another (Mac Mail)

09 SEPT 2016

Dear Apple support committee,

(MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6)

In Mac Mail I have 2 active accounts - but 1 will not be available anymore at the end of this week.

I need to move all of my email messages 2k and 50 folders from an account that will be cancelled (****@ipl-nicolay.com) to my (****@iCloud.com)

  • Can I simply move or copy/paste ?? the current folders from the (****@ipl.Nicolay) account to my (****@iCloud.com) account?
  • And will all the messages still be accessible and intact?
  • I did a test and just moved 1 folder into my (iCloud) account -- but I want to make sure that when the other email address gets cancelled that it’s still there.

The only other option would be to create a new GMAIL email address and try to move everything into that.
But I heard it is difficult and that I will lose all the file folders because GMAIL uses labels?

The next step is I will need to have all the new incoming messages “forwarded” from the (*****@ipl-nicolay.com) to my (****@iCloud.com)

Thank you

-Michelle

Why not create another On My Mac mailbox(s) to store the e-mails from the old account? That way they won't be affected by/affect iCloud.

If you are losing the account for whatever reason, there is no way to forward e-mails from that account unless you can set something up on the e-mail provider's website.

    Hi Eric,

Thanks for your suggestion but I'm not sure what you mean. The account that is going to be cancelled in a week is on the 1+1 server which is connected to a website that was recently taken offline and deleted because I created a new business website using a different host/server.

How do I create another"On My Mac mailbox(es)? Wouldn't that be in my iCloud email account?

    Thanks

Mail/Mailbox/New Mailbox and select On My Mac.

    Hi Eric,

    Thanks for your reply.

    (1) OK so I followed your directions and created a new MAILBOX folder and it shows up under "On My Mac".

    (2) If I "move" all 50 folders from below/in the non-Mac email account (that will be cancelled)... then the folders and all the 2k of messages should be fine?

    (3) And this way I am not using my michelle@iCloud acct?

    (4) But if I need to access those folders and messages from my phone, etc. - they are not showing up under my iCloud acct? because we moved them into this "NEW MAILBOX" folder?
