Q: Safari not saving bookmarks or history we restarting

I have a MBP running El Capitan.

I've noticed for a while that when I restart my mac or quit and restart my safari, none of my favourites have saved and there is no history.

I have done some research and so far have not found a solution to my problem. But while researching, I've come across what I think is my problem but I don't know how to fix it.

When i go to

~/Library/safari

The only item in that folder is Extensions and in that file is Extensions.plist

I have none of these which are some of the files I come to realise should be there, but not sure what else is missing:

Bookmarks.plist

History.plist

LastSessions.plist

WebpageIcons.db

What can I do to fix this and restore my safari to have all the files it should have and to have it working properly again?

TIA

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Are you using Safari/File/New Private Window to view websites? What is Safari/Preferences/General Safari opens with set to? The missing information isn't saved when using Private Windows.

Try running the combo update. It installs all previous updates plus the new one, which can replace any files that may have become corrupted.

Thanks for the speedy reply Eric.

I have inserted screen shots of Library folders. The one that is grey'd out is the only one that has the Safari File that doesn't have all the files it should. The others don't have any Safari files.

I don't use New Private option, or at least not that I'm aware of.

I am downloading the recommended update and will run when completed and see if there is any change and revert.

    Thanks.

You are welcome. Long shot - try going to System Preferences/General and setting Safari as your default browser.

Try resetting your user permissions. The user Library folder shouldn't be greyed out.

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

I would also get rid of Chumsearch, MacKeeper, and Megabackup.

thanks Eric. I tried to rebuild the permission but no user options showed.

I also tried to run the combo update but it came up with an error saying it was not able to save to the HD option that came up.

Any other options I can try?

Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility and select First Aid. Then re-install the OS.
