Sep 9, 2016 8:35 AM in response to ShagCAby pany1,I went to the store yesterday and asked them. They told me it would be locked to the carrier i choose, out of the four they let you choose. They then said the option for "Sim-free Unlocked" has to be there and if it isnt, then it wont work when i would try and put another international sim in @shagca

Sep 9, 2016 8:42 AM in response to pany1by ShagCA,You may have spoken to an employee who doesn't know their product that well. If the phone is locked and you have paid in full, the carrier should give you the unlocked code upon request if you satisfy their terms and condition. It's the law. Keep in mind that some cellular carriers play dirty by locking devices to their network when activated in their network.

Sep 9, 2016 8:44 AM in response to pany1by ShagCA,Just buy one. I bet it is not locked. I trust Apple website (the snapshot I posted earlier is from Apple.com iPhone pre-order site).

Sep 9, 2016 8:47 AM in response to pany1by Phil0124,Get the T-Mobile version and pay full price and its a certainty it will be unlocked.
Ignore the geniuses at the Apple Stores.
If you have your current sim card with you from India, you can even test it right there in the store with the iPhone and if it does not work return it right there and then for a full refund no questions asked.

Sep 9, 2016 8:50 AM in response to pany1by ShagCA,Test it before you leave. Borrow a friend's nano SIM for the test. If you're with T-Mobile, borrow someone else's AT&T nano SIM and vice versa.

Sep 9, 2016 8:51 AM in response to ShagCAby pany1,luckily i actually have my english sim card with me. I could try that right? But its not a nano-sim its a micro sim
-
Sep 9, 2016 8:57 AM in response to pany1by ShagCA,Sure but you'll have to cut it to nano size (and get a micro SIM tray to be able to use it in your other phone). I don't know if your English SIM can roam in the US but I think it should be ok just for testing SIM lock.
To be honest with you, I'm not worried about getting a SIM locked phone from Apple store. It's highly unlikely. I'm more worried about cellular carrier screwing me over (by locking the device) when I activate it in the network.

Sep 9, 2016 8:57 AM in response to pany1by Phil0124,The micro-sim will not fit in the iPhone 7. It needs to be a nano sim, or you will have to cut down your micro sim to nano size to test it.
It does not need to be able to roam, the iPhone will just need to activate with it, and then you can remove it.
You can also borrow one from someone you know for a quick test at the store.
If the iPhone activates correctly, you know its unlocked.
If it were not unlocked it will show an error on screen.
