Q: opened email in phone don't  apply mail.app rules?

I have set up mail.app with two gmail email accounts. I setup rules to change background color to distinguish them. Some times I open the email either in the browser or in my phone. When I open the mail.app in my computer, those emails that are read, have a white background instead. Is this a bug or I'm missing something in the settings?
