Auto-Lock on iPhone 6s+ and iPad Pro 12.9

I am trying to find out what happens to running processes when either my phone or tablet drop into auto-lock (each is set to 5 minutes). Does all running processes keep running or are they suspended? When I am syncing music to my iPhone and it goes into auto-lock it appears to stop the sync but when I unlock it it starts up again.

iTunes on Windows-OTHER, Windows 7, Also use Windows XP, 2 iPods
