Q: deleting photos from iPhoto, but still keeping them on my iMac

Once photos are downloaded to my iMac, can I safely delete them from my iPhone and not have them deleted from my iMac?

I still want my pictures, but they take up storage space.  I tried to delete them and then got a notification that they would also be deleted from all my devices.  Does my computer fit into all my devices?

Then it sounds like you are using iCloud Photo Library - if you are then you can not since the entire purpose of iCloud Photo Library is to sync all devices keeping them exactly the same - all changes made on any device are made on all devices - Additions, deletions or edits - for devices with limited storage you set optimized photos on those devices

If you do not want that then do not use ICPL

If iCloud Photo Library is not one and MyPhotoStream is on your Phone and your Mac then all photos taken with the phone will be downloaded and imported to Photos on the Mac - once they have migrated and been automatically imported to the Mac you can delete them from the Phone - test with one o tow to see

Also with MPS all photos imported to your Mac are sent to your iPhone
