Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility. Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

Your drive may need cleaning. Cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.

Sep 9, 2016 11:01 AM in response to lianakealohilanimartinezby MichelPM,Could try purchasing and using a commercial retail dry brush CD/DVD laser lens cleaning system disc.
These lens cleaning discs can revive a malfunctioning or failing optical drive
Also, could try powering down and unplugging your iMac and take a credit card completely covered in a microfibre cloth and stick it into the CD slot and then pull it out and see if any dirt comes out and onto the cloth.
Wipe the loose dirt off of the cloth and reinsert the cloth into the CD/DVD slot, again, clearing the dust and dirt off of the microfibre cloth each time before reinserting the cloth/credit card until no more dust/dirt/lint comes out of the CD/DVD slot and no more dust/dirt/lint appears on the microfibre cloth.
