Which MacBook Pro model do you have? Many of them no longer support IEEE 1394 and you may need to use a FW to USB cable, the compatibility is up to the manufacturers of the device

Sep 9, 2016 10:53 AM in response to vesrieby Niel,If the MacBook Pro has a FireWire 400 port, you need a 6-pin to 6-pin cable.
If the MacBook Pro has a FireWire 800 port, you need a 6-pin to 9-pin cable.
If the MacBook Pro has a Thunderbolt port, you need the same cable as the one for the FireWire 800 port, as well as a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter.

Sep 9, 2016 10:58 AM in response to vesrieby Mike Sombrio,You need a firewire 400 to 800 cable http://www.apple.com/shop/product/HHLW2ZM/B/belkin-firewire-800-400-9-pin-6-pin- cable-2-m-66-ft?fnode=8b&fs=f%3Dcable%26…
If the transfer is only a few files you'd be better off just copying them to a usb thumbdrive and moving them to your MBP.
