Q: ipod played via car ipod socket plays back audiobooks too fast

I have a new Skoda Yeti with an in built ipod socket. When I connect my ipod nano it replays the speech at a very fast rate which is uinintelligible. Music is played back at a normal speed.

For modern car audio systems, the car audio system does the playback work, not the iPod.  The iPod is only acting as a data storage device (like connecting a USB flash drive with audio files).  In other words, the iPod is not playing the audio file.  You should consult the user docs for car audio system, to see if there's a setting that controls playback speed.

On the iPod (and in your iTunes library), is that "spoken-word" audio item stored as a song (in your music library), or does it appear as another media type, such as audiobook or podcast?

Thank you that is so helpful. The spoken-word item is filed in the itunes library as 'audiobook'. I will follow your advice and peruse the car manual

Since this spoken-word item is categorized as audiobook, there is a setting on iPod nano that changes speed for audiobooks.  It's in the iPod's onboard Settings screen, under Playback -> Audiobooks.  It can be set to Normal, Faster, or Slower.

In case the car audio system is "smart" enough to actually read that setting on iPod, distinguish between song and audiobook, AND change its playback behavior accordingly, you can see if changing that setting on the iPod has an effect on how the car audio system plays the audiobook
