repeatedly asked to enter iCloud password

Multiple times a day, the lock screen on my phone displays:

Apple ID Verification

Enter the password for

"my email address" in Settings.

Once the phone is unlocked, I get a similar pop-up message with the choices "Not Now" or "Settings".

Despite having repeatedly entered the password, this is happening every few hours.

Any ideas? iPhone 6 running 9.3.5.
