Q: Startup disk

Hi all,

I put my mac on sleep mode last night and tried to open it today but this is what was displayed on the screen . I didnt want to choose restart or shutdown since a lot of files were open and tabs as well and I really do not want to loose any of it. when I click on the startup disk button it states that I cant change the startup disk to the selected one. any idea what all of this means and what I have to do? I do not want to loose any of my files or tabs which were open. Help is much appreciated.

That is not Startup Disk preferences. That is from the disk encryption system. The only button is Unlock. You need to click on it to unlock the system.

It appears that your drive may have failed. Do you have an external bootable drive you can use to see if the computer is still bootable? If not, then try using the OS X installer DVD that came with the computer when it was new. See if you can boot from that. If you can then open Disk Utility from the DVD's screen menu under Utilities. See if the internal drive appears in Disk Utility. If it does, then try repairing it.

If you still cannot boot the computer then you can try re-partitioning and formatting the drive, then install OS X from the DVD. If you are able to do that then you have fixed the problem but lost everything on the drive. If you still cannot get the drive working, then it has died.
