Q: "On My Mac" account deleted from Contacts

My "On My Mac" account disappeared from Contacts. I am able to view my contacts in the iCloud account but I prefer using "On My Mac" as my default for my MacPro. I tried to add an "On My Mac" account in Contacts, but it won't accept my password. Please advise.

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), Cinema Display

Open Contacts, and go Edit/Select All. Then File/Export and export as a V card file. Disconnect from the cloud, and then File/Import.

Thank you Eric for your reply...

I tried this, and the contacts end up in the iCloud account because there is no "On My Mac" account listed in the "Accounts Preference" of Contacts. When I turn iCloud off, I can see On My Mac in the Groups list of Contacts, but the contacts I import only creates a duplicate in the iCloud account.

The "On My Mac" account is not listed in the Contacts Accounts, and I've tried to create another "On My Mac" account. I select the + in the Accounts Preferences and select "Other Contacts Account" from the drop down window. I choose CardDAV, Automatic "Account Type", enter my email, and password. I receive "Unable to verify account name or password".

I tried Time Machine, but it did not create the On My Mac account.

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.
