Do you keep your old phone at the end of of Apple upgrade programme?

I'M thinking of getting the new iPhone on the upgrade programme, can I sell it privately at the end and still upgrade?

Hi

In short, no - you cannot keep (or sell privately) an iPhone bought under the iPhone Upgrade Program and also exercise the Upgrade Option. You either pay the full amount due and keep the iPhone or you trade it in part way through and upgrade to a new iPhone.

If you enrol in the iPhone Upgrade Program and keep the iPhone until all instalments have been paid (so the loan is fully paid off), then you can keep the iPhone and do whatever you like with it.

If you have paid the equivalent of the minimum number of instalments required in order to qualify for an upgrade under the program (currently at least 12 in the US), then you can exercise the Upgrade Option and buy a new, eligible iPhone (subject to availability).

(An Early Upgrade Option enables you to upgrade early by making advance payments so that you have paid the same equivalent minimum number of instalment payments).

Under the Upgrade Option:

  • You would trade-in your existing, financed iPhone as directed by Apple.
  • In return for trading it in, subject to meeting the program's terms (including the iPhone being in acceptable condition and paying your first instalment under the new loan), your original loan would be considered to have been repaid in full.
  • You would then continue with your new loan and new schedule of instalments, with a new monthly cost depending on your choice of new iPhone.
  • The same upgrade option would apply in due course.

Terms and conditions apply.

The program is not a trade-in program. You would be purchasing the phone separately meaning you can sell your old phone if you wish. One need not have any phone in order to take advantage of the annual upgrade program. That is my understanding of it.

This addresses a different question: whether or not an old phone needs to be traded-in when you first enrol in the iPhone Upgrade Program (trading-in a phone at that time is optional).
