Did you try quitting iTunes? Then re-open iTunes and try again. If that does not help, shut down (power off) computer, start up, and try again. If your computer is a laptop, connect its power adapter (so it's not running on battery power). Also, if you have other USB devices connected (especially USB storage devices), disconnect them and connect iPod to a direct USB port on computer by itself. Try more than one port.
