Thanks for your input. Since you confirmed my opinion, and the device is still under warranty, I contacted Apple's help service. They agree something like you describe is probably the problem, and are sending me a replacement remote.

Call me a fanboy, but I must report Apple handled this beautifully. I called Apple Support on Saturday, and by Monday afternoon I had a replacement remote delivered by FedEx. No cost, of course, as long as I return the faulty remote (in the packing and pre-printed FedEx label Apple sent) within ten days.
Apple stuff rarely fails, but good to see their service standard is still excellent when you need it.
