Q: I was entering numbers into an existing pages chart and suddenly the formatting changed and I cannot type the numbers the way I need too.  How do I fix that?

I was entering numbers in an existing chart in Pages to update information and suddenly the cells won't hold the formatting I want.  It is changing the numbers from the way I type them and I don't know why or what to do?

    Hi Slf@LF,

Numbers and pages try to be smart and recognize wht kind of data you are entering. If you enter something that looks like a date they are going to treat it as such. Some people have difficulty with serial numbers because the programs want to format them as numbers and not text.

Post the data you are trying to enter and how it is being changed and we ca probably figure out what is happening to it.

    Hi quinn,

In the meantime I discovered that my problem was that the entry had a slight variation from the rest of the entries so I changed it to match all the others then I was able to continue.  However, I have another problem with the document now that I cannot resolve so I believe I need to take a class on numbers at the Apple Store as I use Excel at work.  I thought numbers was supposed to be so user-friendly but have not found that to be true.

    Thanks for your prompt reply.

    Hi Sandy,

Glad it was a simple fix.

It can be a transition to move from Excel to Numbers. They have different design philosophies. With your many years experience with Excel your instincts will favor that approach.

There are a few places I can suggest for refining your Numbers chops. the first would be the function sidebar that appears when you have the function editor open. You will find good info on functon syntax here also expample of how functions can be used. SG promotes studying the included templates and this can be a great way to to see functions in action. Last, this forum is a great place to get answers or even read approaches to problems you haven't encountered yet.

    Quinn,

I was expecting numbers to be much simpler to use.  But definitely will take time to adjust.   Thanks for being so helpful.
