Q: Message, preview, app store not responding

Hi, I noticed that my messages would open but then nothing would happen when I would click around a few days ago. I couldn't even access the force quit menu from it. But if I alt-tab to another app, I would be able to do so. Restarts, verify permissions both have not helped. After checking various apps, I notice the same issue with the app store and preview.

I have a mid 2014, 15 rmbp running OSX 10.10.5 (Yosemite). Any help would be appreciated.

You can try booting into Recovery and from the DiskUtility> run the First Aid> on your Macintosh HD

hold the command R on boot

Try running the combo update. It installs all previous updates plus the new one, which can replace any files that may have become corrupted.

Tried the combo update (but I ended up doing it to 10.11.6 so is that different in terms of ability to help?) -- had to do it from guest account due to app store not responding. Didn't seem to work unfortunately.

    Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferenes, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

    Safe Mode - About

    Safe Mode - Yosemite

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Hi, thanks for the detailed reply. So I followed these steps (I had already made a clone prior to updating to El Capitan), and the apps did not work in safe mode. I actaully tried to see if the clone would okay, but opening messages when booting from the cloned drive literally just turned my screen black and nothing popped up.

Also, I am now noticing it is not just the apple apps. Almost all my apps are starting to do this including Evernote. Luckily, my Chrome, Safari, Excel, and Word are still functioning but I am unsure where to go from here. I ran apple diagnostic, but that just said possible battery issue.

What is also weird is that I believe when I was booting into safe mood, the screen was flickering with horizontal lines like the picture was going to cut out. I can't recall if this was safe mode booting or when I was doing the El Capitan update as suggested by Apple help.

If El Capitan did not work, I am guessing trying to just do the Yosemite combo update would not have done anything different correct?

Should I still do the Etrecheck report if safe mode did not help?

    Thanks everyone for your input.

So, I talked to apple support again and did a SMC and PRAM reset. Then I tried the safe mode boot again. It was the safe mode that had the screen flickering. Apps were responding in the exact same way in safe mode as in regular operation. It was the booting from bootable clone where messages turned the screen blank.

I did notice however that really the only thing that is not working is the left click. I can scroll, I can right click, and I can type it seems (I got lucky that I don't need to click to type on textedit; this is what made me realize it is only a left click issue). And right now, it seems to be happening with more apps than less. Chrome, Safari, Office, and Skype are okay still and seem to be functioning okay. I did test an external mouse but it had the same results.

Here is the Etrecheck report, but please not this was after safe boot did not help:

Did you try using another admin account to see if there was a difference?

Most people advise not to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.

    CleanMyMac 3 Uninstall

After un-installing, use this program to make sure you got all the pieces.

    EasyFind – Spotlight Replacement

Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair Disk and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.

Eric, couple questions but first. I actually don't use that maccleaner. I'm assuming I downloaded years ago (I have been a Mac user since 2006). But I will follow your uninstall suggestions. I do use an app uninstalled. Does that fall into the same category?

ok, I know I'm going to seem like an idiot here but I moved five months ago and have not run time machine since then as I lost the power cord to my hard drive. I will make another bootable clone on another hard drive, but if both of them crash, is there any way that I can save my files? I copied over my home folder and applications support onto an external. My photos, music, movies were already kept mainly on the external.

99% of my important recent files are stored on Dropbox, and I have also backed up my Dropbox folder. I am wondering if it would just make sense to do a clean install rather than try to recreate the bootable clone?

I Guess what I am really asking is after carrying out your steps and then doing the reinstall, how should I move my data over if the bootable clone does not work correctly? Will having my home folder, media, Dropbox, and app support enable me to at least have all my files and then I will just have to reset my settings? I've actually wanted to clean out my comp for years. Does the home folder really have any corruptible elements or is this more likely an application/library issue?

I realize how stupid it was to only make bootable clones for the past month. This issue makes it painfully clear. I will adjust my strategy going forward, but I'm hoping I can still salvage the situation.

If you reboot into your normal account, do they work?
