What does cosmetic damage mean ?

My iphone 6s is experiencing aluminium chipping and it's said to be a cosmetic damage. So I would like to know what is really considered under cosmetic damage?

iPhone 6s, iOS 9.3.5

Cosmetic damage is damage that does not affect the functionality of a device, though Apple's definition of this may differ from the user's. Because it does not affect a device's functionality, cosmetic damage is not covered by the warranty. In the case of chipping aluminum, it does not make the phone any less functional, it just looks less than desirable.
