Mac failed to reboot for Security Update, what to do?

The system failed to restart during the latest system security update. Manual reboot did not help the installation of this upgrade. Any idea on how to overcome this situation?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Without know what exactly happens when you try to boot:

- Try resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM

- Try starting in Safe Mode

- Boot to Recovery and repair the startup disk

- If it is repairable reinstall the OSX

- If you do not have a backup use disk utility to restore the internal disk to an external disk so you can try to recover data.

Then format the startup disk and do a fresh install of OSX
