Q: Battery dies suddenly despite reasonable charge

Summary of problem:

  • iPhone 6 about 18 months old running iOS 9.3.5 (13G36)
  • I charge it all night after letting it completely discharge.
  • Phone takes 100% charge, but does not last beyond 10 hours with battery dropping dramatically
  • Often, it would show 30%, I launch a heavy app like FB or Evernote and the phone shuts down immediately, demanding a charge before powering back up
  • I have tried hard reset via home + power button
  • I have tried different battery doctor apps
  • I have switched off all apps and disabled location services as well as controlled background apps to be really sure it is not a software issue

I believe the issue has exasperated after the last iOS upgrades. Is it just that the battery is now too old, which I am disinclined to believe since my charging habits are very good!

Anyone have a similar issue or suggestions on what to do short of replacing the battery?

Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store and they can diagnose the battery, to tell you if there is a battery problem. If not, you will need to troubleshoot the device to determine where the battery is going. That can be traced with Settings>Battery and see what is using the highest percentage of battery over a 24 hour period.

After a reset, the next steps in user troubleshooting are restore from backup, restore to factory; testing after each.

Battery usage last 24 hours has nothing extraordinary. WhatsApp is the largest consumer at 29% followed by Phone at 23% and everything else is single digit. No unusual activity.

So what you are suggesting as next steps are :

    • Backup phone
    • Hard reset using Home + Power (already done, so proceeding to next step)
    • Factory reset
    • Restore from backup and see how it does over a day

    Is that correct?

While you would first backup the device, and since you say you already did a reset, the next step is restore from backup, test. After that, if necessary, restore to factory, test.
