Q: How to create a non @icloud sent from alias in mail 9.3 OSX 10.11

How can I create a non @icloud sent from alias in Mail 9.3 running OSX 10.11?

I've read all the Apple help links.

It is easy with IMAP account to create @icloud aliases - preferences / account information / edit aliases - which sends you to your iCloud account.

It is easy with POP account to create any xx@yyy.com alias - preferences / account information / edit aliases - which you can do directly in the pop-up window.

What I can't figure out how to do is to create an xx@yyy.com alias in my IMAP iCloud account. It was possible in Yosemite

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), Mail 9.3

It's never been possible. All iCloud aliases end in @icloud.com; and you can't use iCloud's outgoing server with anything other than your iCloud address as the 'From' address. You can of course set up Mail on your Mac so that it access iCloud messages but uses your own ISP's outgoing mail server, which may well allow you to use other addresses.

I have xx.yyy.com email forwarded from work to my @iCloud email.

I want to be able to reply from my @iCloud email account so people see the "From" address as xx.yyy.com

I have no idea what is involved in setting up an alias for .yyy mail, I don't even know what .yyy mail is. Good luck

My typing ia bad. I meant xx@yyy.com (not xx.yyy.com) as an example of an alias that is easy to set up in my  POP Telus account under preferences / account information / edit aliases. e.g. joe@shelves.com

When I am at home I can send from any address - @telus or @shelves (POP) or @me or @iCloud.com (IMAP). When I am away from home, my ISP will only work with my IMAP account - This is why I'd like to set up the IMAP alias.

As far as I know, when you're away from home, your ISP does not provide you with any service. They only do when you're at home. So, away from home, you are dealing with whatever wifi network you are using and that means IMAP accounts are available through your browser and web based email accounts. POP mail is only available at home unless you set up some sharing which makes anything on your Mac accessible.

That still doesn't tell me what email system it is, which is what I need to know. (Unless your email is actually provided by the yyy company)

I will have to ask what email system is used at work - the @yyy company. I never log on to that server, email is always forwarded to my @iCloud mail.

Thanks for the quick responses. It looks like this request might be a dead end.

I'm afraid you can't, and there's no way round it.
