Q: my iPod classic won't work unless it is plugged in.

The real problem is that the screen won't even turn on without being plugged in; however, even if it is plugged in it is virtually obsolete. When I plug it into my computer it shows a "low battery... please wait" screen. When I held down the menu and center button the screen went blank before returning to the low battery screen. When I have it plugged into my alarm clock dock it shows a message on the screen with a picture of the end of a charge cable saying "Use iTunes to Restore," and then the screen shuts off. When it is plugged into the dock it either shows the iTunes restore screen, the screen is off, or the apple signal appears (and then quickly disappears to go blank). I saw someone recommend to leave it without charge for at least two days. I did, but now I'm dealing with this. How can I make my iPod work normally again?

First thing to determine is... does the display show that the battery is charging when it is plugged into a power source (computer, AC, car)? If so, and after 2-4 hours (normal time for a full charge) you're still getting those messages, I'm guessing your battery is dead and needs replacing (though it coud be more serious than that; if so, it may end up being a repair or replace choice.) If this is the case, and your iPod is still within manufacturer's warranty, you may be able to upgrade to a newer model for a nominal fee. That's how I ended up with a 7th generation iPod... battery on the 5th gen was almost dead, an Apple offered me a new 7th gen (160 gb verson) for $65, so of course I took them up on that. Might be worth a call to Apple, or, a visit to an Apple Store, if you're close enought to one.

If the display shows that the battery is not charging, it may be as simple as trying a different charging cable. Really. (I had a previous issue with what turned out to be a bad cable, so I went to Ollie's and got a chrging stand for $5 and it works like a charm. Swing buy a nearby "bargain" store - Ollie's, Big Lots, even a dollar store - and try a different cable. That should let you know where the problem lies, and thus, provide possible options.)
