    The original MacBooks can’t be upgraded past 10.6.8.

    I don't know if people are discriminating between downloading (your question) and installing.  I know you cannot install but I suspect you cannot even download since the Mac App Store app will only offer system items you can actually install on the computer.  I know I would be interested in downloading Sierra for possible future use but my computer won't actually install Sierra.  I just tried downloading the beta version and it did at least add it to my purchased items list so theoretically if I do have a computer a few years down the road that could install it but Apple has removed it from its downloads I should be able to get it.
