Q: My Imac has been shutting down and turning back on. On September 6 I installed a security update. Could it be related to that?

My IMac has been shutting down and restarting by itself several times a day.I t does it whether I'm on the computer or not. This has been going on for about a week. About a week ago I installed a security update. Could the problem be related to that? How do I troubleshoot the problem? Thanks.

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

I had this exact problem, tried antiviruses, reseated the ram, ran Disk Warrior against it, and no matter what, the cursor would freeze and about 30 seconds later the iMac would reset. I would get no kernel panic notifications, I would get no dialog boxes saying "your Mac restarted, etc...."

Then I installed 10.11.4 over the current one.

Problem is gone! I've been editing video and that means I've been putting the machine through its paces. Not a hiccup.

Now, however, Apple (which has shown no cognizance of this problem to my knowledge, much less coming up with a plan to fix it), desperately wants me to do an upgrade to 10.11.6, and is pestering me to do so.

**** no! [Sorry, was censored, obviously meant heck no, by golly.....]

But I don't know how to tell the machine to bug off and stop the upgrade script. Anybody have ideas on that score?

    Thanks,

    /john

If it is shutting down and restarting, that sounds like a kernel panic. OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem." - Apple Supp…

However, sometimes you don't get the gray screen. See if it generated a panic log. If so, copy and paste one of the logs in here.

    Open Console

If the log list isn't showing, click on the Show Log List button.

Click on the Disclosure Triangle next to System Diagnostic Reports.

Look for log entries with names starting with "Kernel"

Select the most recent and it will show the log in the right-hand pane.

Select all of the Text after Anonymous UUID (we don't need that).

Copy and paste it into a reply here.

Kernel panics are most often caused by third-party system extensions. The changes to the security may have made it such that a previously working kernel extension now does not work correctly.

I don't know. Never installed it myself, but you apparently did. The references in the log that point to it are: com.devguru.driver.SamsungMTP

You should check the Samsung website for instructions.

I do have a Samsung phone that I charge using my IMac. I've been doing that for a couple of years. Why would that be causing a panic now?

I went to the Samsung website but could find nothing about uninstalling the driver you listed.

Because the poorly written software was using some undocumented solution which was found to be a vulnerability and was shut down.

The quick googling I had done previously linked that to development software. If it is merely required for accessing your Samsung phone, then that is the software you need to uninstall in order to verify that it is the cause.

Thanks for your response. I haven't been successful in finding the devguru driver to uninstall it. If you have any further instructions on how to find it, I would appreciate it. The computer has not shut down today so maybe it fixed itself.

I really appreciate your trying to help.

Kernel Panics are primarily caused by hardware faults and kernel extensions. Sometimes, the kernel extension is required to use some hardware.

There are few kernel panic logs that show obvious causes (such as RAM or GPU faults). To resolve them, you must remove the most common causes and test. If they still occur with all third-party kernel extensions removed and all peripheral hardware disconnected, then it is most likely an internal hardware fault.

It appears that the Kies software installs that kernel extension. If you don't still have the installer dmg, you'll need to download it again. There is an uninstaller on the dmg. That software has caused problems for others in the past. They may have fixed it so that it didn't panic, but the changes with the security update may have triggered something new.

It may be that it just needs to be uinstalled and reinstalled.
