Phone dies when battery still has a charge

Why is my phone dying when the battery still has a charge? When it shuts off I try to turn it back on but it displays the screen indicating it needs to be plugged in to charge. When I plug the charger in, my phone immediately turns on and starts charging where the battery was when it died. I have a 6s. This stared a few weeks ago and simultaneously the battery life also became very short.

I have had the same the same issue before on my iPhone 5 as well. The first thing I would do is try and reduce battery consumption from apps or location services that may be running in the background. If stopping unnecessary items from draining your battery doesn't help then it may just be the percentage of battery being displayed that is goofed. It may show your battery at a certain amount, but in reality it is actually lower then displayed. I believe this problem can occur when a device is charged more than it needs to be. For example, plugging in your phone every night before you go to bed even if the phone is at 50%. If it gets worse you may have to replace the battery for a new one.
