Q: Recover Pages documents from iTunes backup?

I reset our iPad 2 to factory settings a while ago and only just realized I had some Pages documents I wanted on the pre-reset machine. However, I had an old iTunes backup from October last year, which is after all the documents were written, but before the reset. When I restored the iPad with the old backup it looks like none of the documents were restored. Is this normal behavior? It makes the iTunes backup system largely worthless if thats so, surely the documents are backed up as well?

Can anybody help me recover these documents?

About the time iOS 9 was introduced a year ago, Pages started defaulting to using iCloud Drive to store documents.  Is that where you are storing your documents?  If so, they should all be there.

Thanks for the reply. The backup is from October 3 2015, so after iOS 9 came out, and the restored OS is showing as 9.0.2.

I was not using iCloud Drive, that's why I was restoring from the iTunes backup. It seems that the "backup" I was generating was really a waste of time if all it was doing was remembering which apps and OS were present. So the data  files from Pages are not maintained in the iTunes backup?
