Q: My first generation i-pad requires software installation out of the blue…hmm, never happened - ever. Now restoring and it flags a message: unknown error occurred (1611). Kindly advice how to proceed. Many thanks in advance.

I mean no disrespect, but I most certainly hope this is not a way of Apple having valued customers submit to purchase an up grade….

    Dear King,

Many thanks and duly noted. I opted to take one step further by visiting one of our "friendly Apple stores near you" for direct technical support. Staff hooked up to the USB as you recommended and still no breakthrough.

Please understand that my 1st G i-pad is of immense sentimental value and I would like Apple to grant me the request  in having it restored by Apple at no cost to me since there is no wrong doing on my part during its operation. As mentioned earlier, it just instantly blackout for no apparent reason.

Your thoughts and/or suggestions are truly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your kind time and consideration.

Do you mean an actual Apple Store, or a authorised (or unauthorised) store/repairer ?

Apple are not here, we are just fellow users. If there is a hardware issue with the iPad then as it's out of warranty you are unlikely to get it repaired/replaced free of charge

Obviously, Apple will not "restore" and iPad that is several years beyond its warranty at no cost. No company would do that. That you can forget about.
